The Huddersfield and District U3A is not an academic institution, but a society of people sharing the similar aims of maintaining and improving the quality of life by keeping fulfilled and active in later life. It was founded in 1984 by Edith Bentley MBE MA, and has been given help and encouragement by Kirklees Council, Kirklees Cultural Services, the Huddersfield Examiner, Huddersfield Radio, several High Schools and numerous local people. It is a Registered Charity but receives no grants from the Local Authority. Huddersfield & District U3A is a registered charity that is financially self supporting.  There are now over 1400 active, subscribing members.

Membership and Class Enrolment

The annual subscription is £15 and membership is open to all those over 50 years of age or who are registered disabled. The spring newsletter includes a form incorporating both a membership renewal form and a class enrolment form for our summer classes only. It is very important to remember that enrolments for Summer Classes can only be accepted if you have renewed your annual subscription for 2017/2018. Please use the current membership card until you receive the new one. You may be asked to show your membership card in order to gain entrance to U3A activities.

MembershipYou will find a class enrolment form for 2017/18 here.

Classes and Activities

All classes and activities are held during the daytime and all courses, unless otherwise stated, will be for two terms. The fee for a 10 week class is £12.00, for a 20 week £24. Fees for short courses will be included in the course descriptions.  All class fees should be sent to the office not given to class tutors.

Class Enrolment

Members are respectfully reminded that enrolment in the “learning” classes such as languages and computing entails a commitment to a certain amount of home study. As places in these classes are limited, please only enrol if you are prepared to give such a commitment.

Tutors

If you decide to cancel a class please inform the venue as soon as possible as well as the office.

All our tutors, class co-ordinators, library and administration staff are volunteers. The continuing success of U3A depends on members offering to share their skills and/or knowledge. If you feel that you could become a tutor or the co-ordinator of a self-help group, please contact the U3A office on  01484 308482. We still need a regular Monday Talks host/coordinator.

Students

If you know that you will not be able to attend a class, please would you contact your tutor directly rather than leaving a message with the office as by the time these messages are picked up, it is often too late to do anything about them.

Insurance

The Management Committee would like to clarify the question of Insurance cover for U3A Members. All members are covered by our Third Party Public Liability Policy and there is no distinction with regard to age. We DO NOT have a Policy which gives our members personal accident cover as this would have to include all members and would be prohibitively expensive. All members are requested to provide their own personal accident cover if they think it necessary.

Every person taking part in U3A activities has a duty to keep themselves safe by co-operating with safety measures, not putting themselves or others in danger, and ensuring that appropriate clothes are worn depending on the activity undertaken.
