Science – Let There be Photons

SPRING TERM ONLY

No prior knowledge of science required just an enquiring mind. We will look at all sorts of science not just physics. Concepts will be explained as we go along. Join to find out. As usual maths will be kept to a minimum. Suggested topics are always welcome provided they are science related. If you have an interest in science I hope you will find it interesting and read further on the topics we cover. Nobel prize winners and FRS members will be asked to take some of the talks but others with an inquisitive mind will, I hope, find it interesting if not fascinating.

A Gentle Look at Some Mathematics and Statistics

SPRING SESSION ONLY
Here we’ll take a leisurely look at topics from these two subjects. We’ll cover contributions from ancient civilisations and some from the last decade. We’ll look at the maths and statistics that can impact our daily lives such as the encryption behind WhatsApp messaging and the interpretation of medical statistics. The pace will be gentle. Digression and reflection will be encouraged and contributions from group members always welcomed. Spring session only.

Information Technology

AUTUMN TERM ONLY

In this group we explore the exciting world of IT that impacts all our daily lives. Expect presentations, lively discussion and some technology demonstrations. Last year, topics included Programming, Social Media, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. We will no doubt return to some of those again, as the IT world is constantly changing, but there will be new subjects too. We’ll discover more about the people who have shaped IT, some of the products being used today and dig a little deeper behind the IT related news-headlines. No technical knowledge is necessary, just a desire to learn more and join in the discussion. Whether you attended before or will be new this time, you are most welcome.

A Miscellany of Plants and Fungi

Please note the change of venue and day.   The course is a basic introduction to some aspects of plants and fungi, with the intention of stimulating your interest in these features of the natural world.  No previous knowledge is required. The class will meet fortnightly on Thursdays starting 24 September between 10am and 12pm. Occasional field trips will be offered during the weeks when classes are not taking place.

Please note that advice on edibility of fungus cannot be provided.
